A recent hearing before the United States Senate asked: what does artificial intelligence change for privacy? Professor Ryan Calo, one of the hearing's witnesses, will draw upon historic and contemporary examples to explore the obvious and not-so-obvious ways AI threatens privacy, and what society can do about it.

Ryan Calo Ryan Calo University of Washington Virginia and Prentice Bloedel Professor at the University of Washington

Ryan Calo is the Virginia and Prentice Bloedel Professor at the University of Washington, with appointments at the Information School and the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering. He is a founding co-director of the UW Tech Policy Lab and a co-founder of the UW Center for an Informed Public. His research on law and emerging technology, including artificial intelligence, appears in leading law reviews and technical publications and is widely cited by national media. Professor Calo has testified before the United States Senate on privacy and AI, emphasizing the need for comprehensive federal protections. He has also organized events and spoken on technology policy for major institutions including the National Science Foundation, the National Academy of Sciences, and the Obama White House.
